Dr. Gastellum with his dogs.

The decision if and when to spay or neuter a dog is an individual one and should be made in conjunction with your veterinarian.  The recommendations are in flux based on data collected over the past three decades and are somewhat breed dependent.  Factoring into your decision will be:

  1. Breed
  2. Expected body weight as an adult
  3. Intended purpose of your pet, i.e. will he/she be a performance dog in the ring, athletic dog, house pet, etc.
  4. Environmental considerations, in particular housing/fencing
